Food bank Belgium
The Belgian Federation of Food Banks fights hunger and food loss in Belgium.
We strive to provide complete, healthy food free of charge to every person in need every month through our local affiliated associations. We always aim for maximum recovery of food surpluses.
The Food Banks are run by volunteers; they are the beating heart of our operation.
Our values are solidarity, free of charge, quality, transparency, neutrality and selflessness. These values form the basis for our work.
Operation:
The first food bank in Belgium was founded in 1986. These regional food banks provide storage and administration and distribute the food to more than 600 local affiliated associations. The objectives of food banks are, on the one hand, to prevent food waste and, on the other hand, to directly help people living below a certain subsistence level by distributing food made available by third parties.
There has never been such a high demand for food parcels as in 2024. On average, 214,000 people used the food bank per month.
